Und wie Farlowe später an anderer Stelle resümierte: „I don´t give a shit what people really think about me as long as they like my singing.”

English Version

PEACE OF MIND is a song by Ray Charles, which he wrote together with Jimmy Holiday and which appeared on the album „Crying Time“ in 1966.

Chris Farlowe, who at the age of seventeen won the All-England Championships with his band, the John Henry Skiffle Group, fell under Ray Charles‘ spell at an early age. As an apprentice carpenter and joiner, he received “an incredible wage” of £3 every Friday, which he used to accumulate a large record collection over the years.

Skiffle was replaced in the late fifties by Rock and Roll and then by Soul, and Chris Farlowe, at that time still using his real name John Henry Deighton, decided to form a new band, the Thunderbirds, who would perform semi-professionally from 1959 and play the modern music of the time.

Artists like Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke or Tal Farlow, from whom John Henry took his name, became sources of inspiration for his own music. Chris Farlowe developed his voice and singing skills by listening, i.e. by buying records of artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan or Dakota Staton, whom he loved.

Farlowe’s powerful, adaptable voice soon sounded like Little Richard, Johnny Burnette or Ray Charles. With cover versions of Ray Charles, Bobby Bland or T-Bone Walker, which he began to integrate into the repertoire of Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds, he developed a considerable following, especially in the North of London.

England’s top music critics soon put Chris Farlowe on a par with Otis Redding and Ray Charles, who would remain Chris‘ lifelong hero. Chris‘ love for Ray Charles‘ music is expressed through his own songs, which are not a simple blueprint of his idol, but bring out the full breathtaking range of his singing – his soul.

PEACE OF MIND by Chris Farlowe first saw the light of day in 1975 during (what I consider to be) one of the finest band projects. The title was recorded on August 6, 1975 at the London Lyceum and was released in December of the same year on the album „Chris Farlowe Band Live!“

PEACE OF MIND (see lyrics) clearly contains biographical lyrics that speak of the singer’s own life and reflect his attitude to life. That’s what makes this song so unique, and even better than the original.

PEACE OF MIND
(Charles/Holiday) Jamarnie Music
Recording of the lyrics: Jane Connell

I used to think happiness was a whole stack of money
But now that I’m older
The whole thing sounds funny
I wanna tell you a story now
Gonna lay it on the line
I’d give it all up, yes I would
For peace of mind.

A gypsy once told me
Chris, you’re gonna go far
Gonna make lots of records
It’s gonna make you a star
Do you know baby, do you know baby
That gypsy weren’t lying
But I’d give it all up, yes I would
For peace of mind
Peace of mind, peace of mind
I find it so hard, oh sometimes

I bought me a cadillac
Then I bought me a train
The bus was too slow,
So I bought an aeroplane
Everybody knows baby, I don’t like flying
But I’d give it all up, yes I would
For peace of mind.

Peace of mind, peace of mind
I find it so hard sometimes

I bought me a cadillac
Oh and then a train
The bus was too slow,
So I bought an aeroplane
You know babe, you know baby
I don’t like flying
I’d give it all up, yeah, yeah
For peace of mind.

Peace of mind, peace of mind
I find it so hard sometimes

A gypsy once told me
Chris, you’re gonna go far
Make lots of records
Gonna make you a star
Oh baby, you know baby, I don’t lie
But I’d give it all up
Oh yeah for peace of mind
I’d give it all up, yes I would
For peace of mind
I’d give it all up now baby
Yes I would if I only could
I’m gonna give it all up for a little, bitty bit of peace of mind
